Sarasota theater behaving itself? Absolutely not. 🎭 Urbanite Theatre’s **Modern Works Festival** is where new plays get to be bold, messy, funny, uncomfortable and wonderfully unfinished. At the Sept. 26 reading of ***Conversations by the Beach* by Mantra Radhakrishnan**, three women — a mother and her two daughters — move through 20 years, five beaches and the complicated aftermath of losing the family patriarch. And this is not tidy grief. It is funny, tense, emotional, liberating and layered with all the things families say, don’t say and carry for years. The use of Bharatanatyam-inspired movement adds another dimension, giving the story a sense of memory and emotion that goes beyond dialogue. That is what made the reading so compelling: no giant set, no theatrical smoke and mirrors, just strong writing, talented actors and a family story with plenty of emotional sand between its toes. Urbanite’s Modern Works Festival reminds us that some of the most exciting theater happens before everything is polished. A little messy. A little unpredictable. And much more interesting. #UrbaniteTheatre #ModernWorksFestival #ConversationsByTheBeach #SarasotaArts #SarasotaTheatre #NewPlays #WomenInTheatre #FamilyBeautiful #SarasotaCulture
